What is Plan C - and is it the same as Plan B?

Understanding the spectrum of options available for your reproductive decisions is a crucial part of exercising autonomy for your body and health. Contraception, the “morning-after pill,” and abortion decisions are all part of this process.

Plan C is a term that may come up in conversations around reproductive healthcare. However, while Plan B is fairly well-known as the “morning-after pill,” Plan C isn’t as well understood.

Defining Plan A, Plan B, and Plan C

To avoid any confusion, let's differentiate between the three types of options available to you.

Plan A

Plan A usually identifies the first step in preventing an unplanned pregnancy by means of contraception. The type of contraception you use is completely up to you and your partner. There is a wide variety of options available, and you can speak to your OB/GYN to find out more about them.

Plan B

Plan B, as the name suggests, may be used when contraception fails to prevent pregnancy or after unprotected sex. This is the emergency contraception pill, which is commonly known as the “morning-after pill.”

The name comes from its usage. The Plan B pill is usually taken immediately after unprotected sex or an incident of failed contraception. However, it should be noted that the pill shows the best effectiveness when taken within three days or 72 hours after unprotected sex.

Plan B contains levonorgestrel, a hormone also used in some contraceptives. This hormone primarily works by delaying or blocking ovulation. Plan B does not result in an abortion because it blocks ovulation and prevents the pregnancy entirely.

However, the Plan B pill is less effective for people who weigh more than 165 pounds.

Plan C

Finally, Plan C is the informal name for medication abortion, which is a method used when a pregnancy is already established. It involves two medications: one that halts the production of progesterone, effectively concluding the pregnancy, and the second that induces cramping and bleeding, assisting in the natural passage of the pregnancy.

This combination of medications is FDA-approved for pregnancies up to 11 weeks and has an effectiveness rate of up to 98%.

Additionally, unlike Plan B, no evidence suggests that medication abortion becomes less effective with increasing body weight.

Accessing Plan C Pills

The accessibility of medication abortion, or Plan C pills, depends on your location and local regulations. In regions with fewer abortion restrictions, more options may be available than in other areas. This can include:

  • Seeking guidance and prescriptions from your healthcare provider
  • Scheduling an appointment at a specialized reproductive healthcare clinic
  • Connecting with a telemedicine services provider offering remote consultations and prescription options
