Abortion Pill

At #LC4W, we believe in universal access to abortion care, regardless of gender identity. A medication abortion is a safe and common procedure performed to interrupt a pregnancy that can be completed in the comfort of your own home.

Our abortion pill service will guide you through every step, offering medical advice through a licensed physician, easy access to the medication, and regular follow-up care for any question or issue you may have.

What is the abortion pill?

The medication abortion, commonly known as the “abortion pill,” is a safe and effective way to end a pregnancy. The process is simple and is performed using two different medicines: mifepristone and misoprostol.

Mifepristone blocks the production of progesterone (the pregnancy hormone), allowing the embryo to detach from the uterine wall. This is followed by misoprostol about 24-48 hours later. Misoprostol induces heavy period-like bleeding, contractions, and cramps, causing the emptying of the uterus.

For many people, the abortion pill feels close to a natural way of ending a pregnancy because it resembles the process of an early miscarriage.

Unlike surgical abortions, a medication abortion does not require a procedure in a doctor’s office. You can have it in a place of your choosing, including the comfort of your own home. Additionally, when compared to surgical procedures, the cost of the abortion pill is significantly lower.

How do I use the abortion pill?

When you use #LC4W as your abortion medication provider, we ensure you have direct access to clear, compassionate guidance on how to take the pills safely and effectively.

The procedure includes the following steps:

1. Mifepristone

You will take the first pill of mifepristone (200 mg) with water. During the next 24 to 48 hours, make sure to rest and eat meals rich in nutrients and vitamins.

2. Misoprostol

About half an hour before continuing with the second step, we suggest taking four tablets of over-the-counter ibuprofen (800 mg in total). This will help reduce any cramps and bleeding that are likely a few hours after you complete step 2.

Take four misoprostol pills (800 mcg).  Do not skip this step even if you have already started bleeding. The medicine can be taken buccally or through vaginal insertion. You are free to choose the method that is most comfortable for you.

To take the tablets buccally, place the misoprostol pills between your cheeks and gums on each side of your mouth and then let them dissolve for 30 minutes. Swallow your saliva as the medicine dissolves in your mouth.

Misoprostol can also be taken through vaginal insertion. For this, either squat or lie down on your back or side. Then, using your finger, insert the tablets, one at a time, deep into the vagina. The tablets should be placed a minimum of one-finger distance inside the vagina. Lie down for half an hour and then continue with the next step.

3. Additional Misoprostol for Some Cases

This step is needed only in case you are more than nine weeks pregnant or haven’t experienced heavy bleeding 24 hours after Step 2. In this case, you will need to take four more misoprostol pills (800 mcg) either buccally or vaginally.

What to expect when taking the abortion pill?

Bleeding, cramping, and contractions are an expected result of taking the abortion pill. These signs may appear about 1 to 4 hours after taking the pill and are likely to continue for up to 5 hours.
In addition to heavy bleeding and cramping, other possible symptoms may include:

  • Upset stomach with diarrhea
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dizziness and tiredness
  • Mild fevers and chills

We recommend taking safe pain medication, such as ibuprofen or paracetamol, to ease your pain and discomfort during this process. Do not take aspirin because it is associated with increased bleeding. You can also apply heating pads or take a warm shower to ease the pain.
